I was talking with my daughter Blaire the other day about the importance of not complaining, and it's direct connection to happiness. And the more we talked about it, the more I realized how true it is.
People who complain all the time are rarely happy. And people who rarely complain seem to be find something to be thankful for at every turn.
There are different types of complaining. Sometimes we complain to bond with others, which is pretty harmless assuming we're not really hurting or attacking the person being complained about. We complain to vent, just to share our frustrations with the world. And finally, we complain because we love to judge situations and other people as "wrong" or "bad", meaning of course that we are "right" or "good" or "better". The third type of complaining is the most caustic (and the type that will rob you of lasting happiness).
I really believe that complaining is at the heart of our happiness. I also think it's at the heart of being a great salesperson.
The opposite of complaining seems to be thankfulness. When you stop complaining you start finding the best in every situation. You start accepting things and people as they are...and when you do that...happiness WILL follow.
Here's my challenge to you -- try to refrain from complaining for 24 hours. Just try it, and see if it doesn't improve your outlook, your level of passion, your ability to accept other people, and your overall mental state!
